Jessica is engaged in Texas Public Schools and has been for almost 20 years. She has served and volunteered in numerous ways, helping students, teachers, parents, and schools in BISD.
No job is too big or too small for Jessica! She has voluntarily worked the ticket booths and concession stands at school programs. She has watched her daughter's classroom to give teachers time to run to important parent/teacher meetings and teacher celebrations at Fair Oaks Ranch ES.
Jessica is a change maker! In 2011, Jessica brought forth a concern to State Rep. Todd Hunter (R) and championed a Texas Public Schools 'records bill' for children with food allergies. Jessica testified at the Texas Capitol and garnered support from various organizations and associations - teachers, physicians, and school districts, including the Texas Association of School Boards - to safeguard children with food allergies in Texas public schools. Jessica continues to create lasting change for Texas children. HB 742 (Skyler's Bill, named after her daughter) requires a parent or legal guardian to identify a child's food allergy to the school district. This allows Texas school districts to take any necessary precautions regarding the child's safety, understand the food to which the child is allergic, and the nature of the allergic reaction. Jessica championed HB 742 to bridge the communication gap between schools and the students suffering from severe to fatal food allergies.
Jessica has extensive policy and public affairs experience, which is crucial during legislative session years and important for strategic planning. She has experience working with governmental entities and engaging with community leaders. Jessica is a highly educated, savvy businesswoman and a small business owner. Jessica is a mom that knows how to get things done!
Jessica has a Proven Record reflecting a Conservative Voice. She understands how a fiscal note can destroy legislation and understands the burden it puts on schools, families, and ultimately the taxpayer! She has a wealth of knowledge on how BISD is still trying to recover as a Robin Hood school district.
With the pandemic, BISD's (elementary schools) enrollment is down - like most school districts - impacting its future funding. Jessica will build on her existing relationships to fight for our schools, families, and taxpayers. She will work collaboratively with the community and area trustees in preparation for a possible bond election to help solve Boerne's growth challenges.
Jessica's leadership style is simple because she leads with integrity. She believes in intentional listening, collaborating with full transparency, and taking a proactive and strategic approach to solving problems while treating others with dignity and respect.
Jessica puts families first! She is married to Chris Burnett, and together they have two daughters. Chris and Jessica also have an adoptive spiritual daughter in Ukraine who became part of their family in 2015. Jessica is an advocate for all children, especially underserved and orphaned children. Every summer, she opens her home for Back Yard Bible Club/RECESS to connect with her neighbors and minister to children. Jessica has also led the prayer at See You at the Pole™ at her daughter's elementary school. Jessica and her husband serve as summer missionaries for Jeremiah's Hope in Ukraine. Through Oak Hills Church, she's served on short-term mission trips to Mexico and Nicaragua.
You deserve to be informed! Jessica will communicate, communicate and communicate! Jessica will ensure families and the community will know more about BISD by communicating effectively and creatively with transparency. She will help streamline communications and bridge the gap between schools, parents, the district, and the community. There are so many good things happening within the district. Yet, there are so many changes impacting our children outside of BISD's control - on a city level, county level, state level, and federal level. Jessica will help position BISD to be top of mind and part of the conversation because she knows how to work with elected officials, lawmakers, and community stakeholders. Jessica will amplify the voice of Boerne families, teachers, and schools.
Jessica brings more than twenty years of experience working for large privately-held and publicly-traded companies in corporate public relations and communications. In today's world, a crisis communicator's skill set is vital to effectively deliver messages to the community, more importantly to families and teachers. BISD needs a board trustee with a strong communications background to encourage more dialogue between families, the district, and the community. That person is Jessica Davila-Burnett!
